First images from Deep Vision for commercial trawlers

2022 marked a milestone for Deep Vision as  we collected the first images from the new pilot for commercial fisheries.

After commercializing Deep Vision for marine research vessels, we  are making an upgraded version for commercial fisheries to be installed directly on the trawl net. The down-sized hardware module contains a stereo-camera, lights, batteries and acoustic modem.

During a CRIMAC cruise together with the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, the first images from the fisheries system were collected. The images are then shipped off to Girona Vision Research where the quality further enhanced for machine learning purposes.

The main objective with the system is to identify fish species and size and be able to select the catch in real time. For the trawl shipping  companies this will increase the catch value, reduce bycatch, and improve overall profitability. In addition, Deep Vision will be instrumental in obtaining sustainable fishing and ocean health.

The Deep Vision pilot will be installed on commercial fishing vessels in 2023
