Innovation Norway is the country’s most important instrument for innovation and development of enterprises and business. Companies from the district of Hordaland, which includes Bergen, received a total of 40 million kroner in financial support from Innovation Norway last year, almost double the amount of the year before and more than any other district in Norway.

— We have experienced a considerable increase in applications compared to earlier years — between 70 to 100 percent, which is a lot, says Director of Innovation Norway, Nina Broch Mathisen to NRK.

In the NRK morning news program Scantrol Deep Vision was featured as one of the companies on this list of entrepreneurs from the west coast. Together with Institute of Marine Research in Bergen the company received support to implement its Deep Vision underwater fish sampling system on the institute’s research vessels next year.

— We are happy to receive the acknowledgement of Innovation Norway for this project as we are stepping into the commercial phase of the development, says Marketing Coordinator at Scantrol Deep Vision, Hege Hammersland-White.

The underwater camera system makes it possible to identify and measure fish based on images taken in the trawl. The system represents a revolution in fish sampling and is an invaluable tool for researches mapping the resources along the coast, something that has traditionally been done by bringing the fish onboard the vessels.

— Our current focus is to implement the Deep Vision system for research purposes, but eventually the system will be made available for commercial fisheries. One can only imagine the benefits it will have for the fishermen to be able to survey and sort the catch as it passes into the trawl, says Hammersland-White.
