Deep Vision frame design upgrades

Experience from more than a hundred hauls with the Deep Vision prototype has resulted in powerful upgrades of the frame design. Read more about the final version of the system for marine research purposes.– We have acquired extensive experience with the Deep Vision system after more than a hundred hauls with the prototype, mainly with the fleet of the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen. This puts us in a unique position to know which solutions work well and which ones we should develop further, explains Kristoffer Løvall, Development Engineer at Scantrol Deep Vision.Løvall has supervised the upgrades of the frame design that has taken place over the past few years, resulting in the final version of the Deep Vision subsea frame for marine research purposes.Some of the upgrades include:

  • Redesign of the frame from a relatively heavy design made of steel and plastic, with separate buoyancy elements, to a more robust "sandwich" construction made of fibreglass. The new frame construction is more stiff, less heavy and more durable.
  • New polyurethane fenders give enhanced protection of frame, independent of the orientation of the frame as it is hauled onboard the trawl slip.
  • Upgraded spare parts facilitate easier repair of the frame onboard the vessel, if necessary.
  • Redesign of "photo studio" for easier maintenance. The new studio can easily be substituted with newer versions or studios designed for other sampling purposes, such as different sizes of species.
  • Zippers on both sides of the frame enable quick and easy attachment of the frame to the trawl net.
